about

From Yukon band Soda Pony comes the cinematic event of the afternoon, Senior Year. A visual collection of Yukon high school fantasies and odes to the messiness of growing older, Senior Year takes the explosion of sound the band is infamous for and puts it on the silver screen. Horrifically awkward first dates, perilous trips down the high school hallway, and bottomless bags of burgers bring cringe-worthy moments to life with command, albeit silent, performances from well-known Whitehorse personality Dan Little and skateboard princess Julie Laliberte. Building off the garage-y charm of Soda Pony’s aptly titled Self-Titled Debut Album and the more robust Sophomore, the band now intends to complete what they call the "Canadian High School Thrill-ogy."

If vintage Degrassi teaches us anything, it's that you've got to complete a saga with a wham-bam finish of a film. Enter filmmakers Thomas and Gabriel Bullen: Cannes Straight 8 selection alumni, new Yukoners, and actual teenagers. There is a synchronic fit between band and filmmakers as Soda Pony strives to share the experience of coming of age while the Bullen brothers are experiencing it. As self-proclaimed "lifers" of the North themselves, Soda Pony makes you feel as though you, too, grew up running for the bus at forty below. Senior Year’s unrelenting charm is, like the after-affects of too much chips and pop, impossible to escape.
